BETTORS FIND SOLACE IN DAILY TIP SHEETS SARATOGA REPORTS BRISK SALES IN SEARCH FOR WINNERS.(Local)

Some people swear by them. Some people curse them. And others compete with them.

In the search for the infallible method of picking the winners, sales of selection sheets are as hot as they ever have been, newsstand sellers said Saturday at Saratoga Race Course.

There's one of every color. Some just list the three horses the tipster favors in each race while others describe every horse. Some explain their methods and some just depend on trust.

Five of the eight selection sheets picked the same horse - Valley Victory - to win Saturday's Alabama Stakes. Two others said the Irish 3-year-old filly would place second. Only one, the yellow The Edge didn't name it at all, going with Classy Cathy instead. In fact, Classy Cathy won the stakes after a stretch duel with the favored Valley Victory.
